Apparently there is no
official overall system of control. Clan tartans are regulated by the clan chief
and the Lord Lyon's office, otherwise there are no strict rules. Any individual
or organisation may have a tartan woven and claim it as theirs. However, the
Scottish Tartans Society will, for a fee, research any new sett checking that it
hasn't already been recorded by them and then register it in their records. This
is a valuable record of tartans and although it has no official standing, people
