Answer:

Douglas are an armigerous clan and were one of Scotland's most powerful families. However, their origins are obscure and the first record of the name is William de Duglas in the late 12th century. They are a border family and it has been suggested that the name originates from the grant of lands beside Douglas Water received by a Flemish Knight from the Abbey of Kelso. The seat of the current head of the family is at Lennoxlove near Haddington in East Lothian.

Variations on the name have included: Dawgleiss (1540), Dogles (1633), Douglace (1504), Dougleische (1583), Dowglasse (1684), Duglace (1454) and Duueglas (1220). The old pronunciation of the name was Doo-glas; the modern, Dug-las.
