Chaiplen: from the same source as Chaplain/Chaplin. From the office of "chaplain". The first written reference to the name was in the reign of Malcolm IV (1153-1165) and its frequency appears to have been predominantly in South-East Scotland and up the East coast.

A brief search of the name in Scotland shows a total of 24 "Chaiplens" between 1620 and 1645, all in St Andrews, Fife.
