I can't find where the
name originates from but it is undoubtedly a common name in Scotland. It was
widespread in the Strathblane area in the 17th and 18th centuries and the
earliest written references are in the Edinburgh/Stirling area. George Black (Surnames
of Scotland) thinks that 'Brash' may be a form of 'Brass' which was common
throughout the British Isles (predominantly in the east) and France.
