About Me

Hello and welcome to Ar Turas. My genealogy journey began on the mid 1990s when I began work on my own family tree. I’ve not only ‘met’ my ancestors and learned about their lives but have also met up with living relatives I never knew and who have now become friends. I’m also embarking on a one-name study of the name Pilmer through the Guild of One-Name Studies.

I studied at the School of Scottish Studies at the University of Edinburgh graduating with an honours degree in Scottish Ethnology. Ethnology is the study of a specific culture through time and in my honours years I studied Scotland & Heritage, Urban Ethnology, Social Organisation, Traditional Narrative, Material Culture, Traditional Cosmology, Traditional Scots Song and Scottish Emigrant Traditions. I completed a project on the Penicuik Common Riding and a dissertation on the Iconography of the Royal Mile in Edinburgh.

Some years later I enrolled with the Open University to take a postgraduate master’s degree in Philosophy with a dissertation on transnational democracy.
